You are always critical when you have to decide what is more important to you and what is less important to you. What you should also know is that a critical research and writing is not a specialized or isolated activity.
When asked to compose this type of essay, you should begin by selecting a topic. Your topic should be such that there is a continuum in your thoughts and the thoughts of your readers. There are several things that you will have to do with the topic. You will have to show that you are aware of the existence of a fact; you can show that you have a mastery over the fact and you can apply what you know to any given situation. When you write critically, you go beyond the literal level of thinking. As you carry this out, you will increase your understanding of it and help the readers in knowing more about the subject matter.
There are three options that you can use in composing a critical research. First, you may decide break down information into smaller parts. Secondly, you will have to gather all what is similar and you will finally decide on what position to take. Before you state your position, your readers must know that you have a reason for criticizing. These are the very things that you employ in your everyday thinking.
When you criticize, you must bring in evidence to support your points. You can bring in anything to support the soundness of your claims. You can import facts and figures, observations, opinions and illustrations. But remember that your evidence must be such that they can be verified easily. Your evidence must have a logical, emotional and ethical appeal. Logical appeal means that your evidence must be factual, objective, clear and relevant to the point in issue. Emotional appeal means that every form of evidence you make should touch the mind of your readers. These are what will be used to stir up the emotions of your readers. They should be able to sympathize with or support you. Ethical appeal means your writing must be such that the readers are happy in the manner which you think of them. Above all, your evidence should be accurate, reliable, up to date, straight to the point, representative of what it intends to prove and sufficient enough to back the claim and persuade your readers.
